English Education Courses

The GPA Requirements for admission to the Single  Subject Credential Program: A GPA of 2.67 in all baccalaureate and post baccalaureate coursework or a grade point average of at least 2.75 in the last 60 semester units or 90 quarter units attempted.


Required CORE Courses for all English Education majors (46 units)

  • ENGL 180: Appreciation of Literature (3)
  • ENGL 310: Applied Composition (4) and  30 additional hours in a 7-12 grade classroom
  • ENGL 320: English Grammar (4)
  • ENGL 363: Shakespeare I (4)
  • ENGL 375: American Ethnic Writers (3)
  • ENGL 380: Approaches to English Studies (4)
  • ENGL 180 is a prerequisite for the above) (3)
  • ENGL 410: Theories of Writing and Literacy (3)

Overview of the English Single Subject Credential Courses: 45 Units 

The English Single Subject Credential Program is comprised of a total of 45 units over 9 courses (1 pre-requisite, 4 co-requisites and 4 core courses, 1 student teaching seminar course, and a semester of student teaching). 

Getting Started: 15 units 

1 Prerequisite Course: 3 units 
EDSS 300G: Introduction to Teaching English (3 units). This course is mandatory. Application to the program is part of this course. It can be taken prior to, concurrent with, or after EDSS 300G. Must be completed prior to student teaching.

4 Co-requisites Courses: 12 units 

H SC 411B: Health Science for Secondary Teachers (3 units)
EDSP 355B: Collaborative Models of Inclusive Education (3 units)
EDP 301 or 302 or 305: Child/Adolescent Development/Educational Psychology (3 units)

ENGL 337: Technology in the English Classroom (3 units)                                                                                                                                                                                                                        


 


Core Requirements: 30 units 
Students must be admitted to the Single Subject Program in order to take these courses. Must be completed prior to student teaching.

A note to CSET exam takers: If you are planning to take the CSET exam for Subject Matter Competency, you are strongly urged to pass it before taking EDSS 450G (Methods). Students taking the CSET who wait until the last moment to take the CSET are not as well prepared for student teaching as they need to be. And, students who take the CSET must demonstrate to the English Education Program that they have the depth and breadth required to successfully complete student teaching.

Supervised Field Experience: 18 Units 
Advancement to student teaching required.
