Celebrating Sustainability at the 2018 Green Generation Mixer
Environmental stewardship, sustainable innovation, and community building were front and center at this year’s Green Generation Mixer & Sustainability Project Showcase on April 19. The Mixer initially kicked-off in 2011 as a small showcase of sustainability-related student projects and was hosted by a group of student organizations on campus. Now in its seventh year running, this annual event has quickly evolved into CSULB’s largest sustainability gathering of its kind.
Hosted by the Office of Sustainability, the Earl B. Miller Japanese Garden, and the Sustainability Task Force, this year’s Green Generation Mixer brought together the CSULB campus and Long Beach community members for an evening of networking, music, food, and sustainability-focused student and faculty projects. As in previous years, the Japanese Garden provided the stunning backdrop for the event, which was part of the Earth Week celebrations taking place on campus from April 16-20.
More than 450 students, staff, and community members had the opportunity to greet-and-meet representatives from over 30 campus and local community organizations including the Aquarium of the Pacific, Long Beach Environmental Alliance, Breathe, and Los Cerritos Wetlands Land Trust, just to name a few (see below for a complete list of participating exhibitors). The formal program of the evening featured inspiring remarks from President Jane Conoley, Associated Students Inc. President Joe Nino, Legislative Director for Long Beach Mayor’s Office Justin Ramirez and Rajan Hoyle, representative for Long Beach City Councilmember Lena Gonzalez.
Local bands Natural Hi-Fi and Experiment 6 provided the evening’s upbeat jazz tunes as everyone enjoyed delicious vegetarian appetizers, desserts, and Suja refreshments. To end the night, attendees were treated to a special, live dance performance throughout the garden of the Global Water Dances by Vannia Ibarguen Dance Arts.
The highlight of the Green Generation Mixer is undoubtedly the Sustainability Project Showcase. As always, the Showcase did not fail to impress again this year. Over 60 diverse and innovative projects were submitted ranging from sustainable design ideas to technology and engineering-related sustainability solutions.
