Underrepresented & First-Generation Student Communities

The Butterfly Peer Mentoring Program supports undocumented students by assisting them in achieving their goals and improving their experience as a college student. Mentors and mentees attend weekly workshops covering topics from communication skills, time management, campus resources, to self-empowerment. The program’s goal is to assist incoming, undocumented students’ in their transition to CSULB.

The Caminos Learning Community primarily serves CSULB students interested in teaching who are Latinx (Hispanic) and low-income; it is open to undergraduate and credential (post-baccalaureate) students. The program aims to build peer networks and encourage professional development with cultural, social, and academic learning opportunities. Peer Mentors are available to help students succeed by providing tutoring, assisting with course searches, adjusting schedules, keeping track of and sending reminders for academic deadlines, and offering professional/academic/personal support throughout students' academic journeys.

EOP Academic Peer Advisors

The EOP Academic Peer Advisors provide academic advising to first-generation and historically low-income EOP students who are in their first and second year at CSULB.

EOP Financial Aid Peer Advisors

The EOP Financial Aid Peer Advisors provide financial aid advising to first-generation and historically low-income EOP students at CSULB.

EOP Tutoring

The EOP Tutors provide services to first-generation and historically low-income EOP students at CSULB.

The GenExcel program is designed to assist incoming, first-generation, first year freshman students transition to CSULB by creating a network of support. GenExcel's core purpose is the cultivation of meaningful relationships between mentors, mentees, and the university community with the goal of supporting first-gen student success, increasing student retention and progression to graduation, and creating future leaders.

The Guardian Scholars Peer Mentoring Program assists current/former foster youth in their educational pursuits by offering services such as academic counseling, financial aid advising, tutoring, mentorship, skills assessment, and math and writing labs throughout their academic career. Additionally, the CSULB Guardian Scholars Program provides advising with an academic counselor who has knowledge about on-campus resources and other critical services available from different departments throughout the university to support college retention and graduation.

The Men's Success Initiative (MSI) Peer Mentor Program seeks to support young men of color in their academic endeavors at CSULB. The program seeks to improve retention and graduation rates with free tutoring, academic workshops, case management, scholarship information, culturally specific workshops, academic and personal advising, models of success lecture series, and mentoring.
