Navigating the Beach for First-Year & Transfer Students

The Beach Engineering Students Success Team (BESST) supports first-year, freshman engineering students; students will join a cohort of fellow teachers and peers and be provided supplemental tutoring (specifically for underrepresented students whose math preparation is not at the Calculus I level). The program encourages academic success and camaraderie among students while connecting participants to university facilities and resources.

The Butterfly Peer Mentoring Program supports undocumented students by assisting them in achieving their goals and improving their experience as a college student. Mentors and mentees attend weekly workshops covering topics from communication skills, time management, campus resources, to self-empowerment. The program’s goal is to assist incoming, undocumented students’ in their transition to CSULB.

COB Peer Advising serves first-year, COB freshman students by helping them navigate, explore, and build communities at the Beach. Advisors support students in establishing personal/ professional goals and graduating in a timely manner through one-on-one support, workshops, and outreach events.

The Excellence Through a Community of Engaged Learners (EXCEL) program provides mentoring and tutoring opportunities in a learning community for freshman and transfer Engineering and Natural Sciences and Mathematics students. The program also offers STEM upper division students a paid opportunity to serve as ambassadors for their college by mentoring and tutoring STEM freshmen and transfer students during the academic year.

The GenExcel program is designed to assist incoming, first-generation, first year freshman students transition to CSULB by creating a network of support. GenExcel's core purpose is the cultivation of meaningful relationships between mentors, mentees, and the campus community with the goal of supporting first-generation student success, increasing student retention and progression to graduation, and creating future leaders.

Mentoring, Advising and Placement Support (MAPS) serves to support and encourage first-year Beach Academy students in their transition to CSULB. Through one-on-one interactions, peer mentors guide students, provide information and access to resources and services, and promote successful completion of mathematics and written communication courses.

The BTTC Ambassador Program, under the general supervision of the Beach Transfer Transition Center Coordinator, will help with connecting new transfer students with each other, other CSULB students, CSULB resources, colleges and the campus community
