These forms of experiential learning offer meaningful experiences in a professional setting that are related to your career of interest. While some may be paid opportunities, others may be unpaid, and others may provide class credit. The Dream Success Center works together with the Career Development Center to ensure you know your options regardless of your immigration status. Here we will provide you with a list of resources and opportunities for you to consider as you begin your search:

Dream Success Center

Dream Success Center staff are available to assist you during your search as needed. Below are some common questions we can help you navigate:

When applying for any opportunity, it is important to review their requirements. Some may require U.S. Citizenship, others may require a work permit, and others may not mention any specifics. If you are not sure, the DSC can always help you review the opportunity. Please be aware of any opportunities that may seem too good to be true or scams.

It depends on the type of payment and your status. If they are offering salary pay and you do not have a work authorization, you may not be able to participate in the opportunity. If the opportunity offers an educational grant or scholarship, that may be a more viable option if they do not have any restrictions for students without an immigration status.

The Dream Success Center has formulated a new initiative with Basic Needs to support currently enrolled students who may be facing housing or food insecurity due to participation in an unpaid internship. For more information on how we can help, email us at dream@csulb.edu. We also advise you to apply for scholarships on Beach Scholarships.

In California, anyone regardless of their status can get a background check that is administered by the state of California. We do advise those with criminal histories to consult with our CARECEN legal providers before completing a background check. As early as you can. It’s important to start building your resume while you are at CSULB to ensure you are on track with your career goals.
