Anne Ambrose - A Bequest for Science Learning
Anne Ambrose was a beloved fixture at The Beach for many years, first as a student and then as a staff member.
The first person in her European emigrant family to attend college, Anne described her undergraduate years, during which she studied journalism and marketing and met her husband, Gary, as "wonderful." She went on to earn a master's degree in instructional systems technology from CSULB and then spent a number of years working in higher-education communications and marketing after beginning her career as an Orange County Register reporter.
When she accepted a staff position with CSULB in 2001, she said she was "thrilled to return" to her alma mater. As external communications editor, she served as the editor of the university's award-winning Beach Magazine, wrote for and edited a variety of other CSULB publications, and covered the campus science news beat.
"She was a great science writer because she had a genuine interest in the subject matter," said Maryanne Horton, Senior Director of Development for the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. "Anne not only understood and enjoyed science, but she also had the ability to communicate complex information in a meaningful, accessible way. This, along with her enthusiastic, positive outlook, made her a real treasure in our eyes."
Anne was also a longtime member of CSULB's Staff Council, serving multiple terms as secretary and at-large executive committee member, and assisting with countless council-sponsored events, including Staff Day and the Cherishing the Children toy drive. In addition, she served as an interim academic senator and as staff representative and secretary for the International Education Committee and the Advisory Council on Enrollment Management. In 2015 she received the Outstanding Staff Member Award.
Anne was also an active member of the CSULB Alumni Association and the Friends of the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden. Writing in Beach Magazine, she once said, "I'm constantly impressed by the caliber of our faculty's teaching, research and creative endeavors; our students' enthusiasm for learning and making a positive difference; and our incredible alumni whose education here set them on the path to success."
Anne understood that this level of excellence requires more funding than the state of California supplies. Indeed, she was a donor herself. Thus, it is fitting that we received a generous bequest intention in support of the Science Learning Center to honor her memory at CSULB.
