About Educational Technology & Media Leadership

The Master of Science in Educational Technology and Media Leadership program prepares graduates for leadership roles in educational institutions and other agencies; it provides training in instructional design, multimedia development and management, and e-learning, and it builds a foundation for individuals planning to pursue doctoral degrees.

Yes, the University is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, one of the six regional accrediting associations in the United States authorized by the U.S. Department of Education. It is also accredited by the California State Board of Education and is on the list of approved institutions of the American Association of University Women. 

Depending on your concentration, you will develop an expertise in instructional design, online teaching, school technology coordination, technology integration into the classroom, and more. Our students work in K-12 and higher education settings or in e-learning corporations.

No, most of our students are K-12 teachers, but others work in higher education, educational agencies or business organizations. Some students are seeking career changes or professional development. Your bachelor's degree could be from any field as long as it is from an accredited institution.

No, the GRE is not required for admission.

The GPA requirement is a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average in last degree (not credential or certificate) earned from an accredited institution of higher education. For more information please see the Eligibility page.

Graduate school fees are set by the CSU Board of Trustees each academic year. The current fee structure may be found on the Enrollment Services website. The approximate cost as of Fall 2024 is $14,672 for the entire Educational Technology & Media Leadership and/or Teacher Librarian Credential program for California residents (fees will vary based on 2 or 3 year tracks).

Yes, everyone has to go through the same application process.

The MS in Educational Technology and Media Leadership program is a fully online program. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) requires International applicants (F1 visa) to be enrolled in at least 8 units every semester, and must take at least 6 units of coursework with an in-person or hybrid modality. This program is fully online and does not meet this requirement. We would like to encourage you to consider applying to one of our CSULB College of Education graduate programs that has in-person or hybrid classes, as that this program will not meet the requirements for a student visa. Please visit the International Applicants tab for more information.

Degree Requirements

All graduate courses required for the MS in Educational Technology & Media Leadership are offered fully online. The synchronous meetings of ETEC 510, 523, 525, 530, 551, and 570 currently alternate between being offered on a weekday evening one year and on Saturdays the next year.

The program will take approximately 2 to 3 years to complete. 

A thesis is one of the options for the exit requirement or you may choose to work on a project or take the comprehensive exam.
