2019 Events for CSU Collaborative for the Advancement of Linked Learning
September 18-20, 2019
In August, Dr. Corinne Martinez, Director of CSU CALL in CED delivered a keynote address at the 1st International Exchange Seminar sponsored by the Japanese Society for the Study of Career Education and Waseda University in Japan. The seminar included faculty, and students from several Universities in Japan as well as in-service teachers and pre-service teachers from the Graduate School of Education at Waseda University.
In September, Dr. Martinez hosted 10 of these teacher candidates from Waseda University. The teachers from the Graduate School of Teacher Education, along with their Professor Takao Mimura, visited Long Beach State and secondary schools in both Los Angeles and Long Beach. On Wednesday, Sept. 18th teachers visited the STEM Magnet program at Nightingal Middle School in Los Angeles and the STEM Academy of Hollywood. The delegation of pre-service teachers met with students, and faculty and toured a Prototype lab/Maker Space where students design and build machines and robots. The purpose of their visit was to gain knowledge and insight related to Linked Learning and secondary school innovation in California. On Thursday, Sept. 19th the Waseda University delegation spent the day at Cal State Long Beach touring the campus and visiting Dr. Betina Hsieh’s class on the development of cross-content literacy practices. In addition, pre-service teachers attended Dr. Martinez’s graduate course on the History of Education, participating in a teacher exchange with Master’s candidates. Shun Watanabe and Katsumi Suzuki, who are preparing to be Junior High school English teachers, presented an overview of the Japanese educational system and shared insights about teaching in their own unique contexts. On the last day of their visit, teacher candidates visited two schools in Long Beach, Lindsey Middle School and McBride High School. Guests were introduced to LBUSD’s college and career pathways. At McBride High School, guests had the opportunity to learn about McBride Engineering, McBride Health Medical and McBride Criminal Justice and Investigation. All three pathways engage students around their interests, and find relevant connections to the real world. A tour of classes included an engineering lab, an integrated art class and a simulation-based healthcare class with “Apollo man” a patient simulator and a state-of-the-art virtual dissection table that allows for 3D anatomy visualization.
