Assessment Planning

Creating an assessment plan involves a series of related steps:

  1. Draft program learning outcomes. A good general rule-of-thumb is 5-7 SLOs for a program, but this can vary. The outcomes should articulate what faculty think a student should know, believe, or be able to do upon completing the program.
  2. Map those outcomes to the curriculum using a curriculum map to give you a sense of where you should plan to assess the outcome.
  3. Using the curriculum map, identify the courses or experiences (e.g., fieldwork, comprehensive exam) through which you will assess the outcome. Use this information to create an assessment plan.
  4. Create signature assignments and rubrics to assess candidate performance.
