CSULB adds new drop-off/pick-up zones, cellphone waiting area on campus
This fall, Cal State Long Beach is launching new drop-off/pick-up zones, as well as a cellphone waiting area, to provide greater convenience and safety to those picking up and dropping off students on campus.
The dedicated zones will remove traffic bottlenecks and trouble spots around campus roadways and increase pedestrian safety when entering or exiting their vehicles, said Gene Wohlgezogen, director of Parking and Transportation Services.
“We are really excited to bring this new program to the campus that will both satisfy a growing demand for student drop-off and the need to streamline traffic flow in certain areas of heavy vehicle congestion,” Wohlgezogen said. “I see this program as a win-win, as we modernize campus facilities, adapt to changing commute behaviors, and improve the safety of our pedestrians on campus.”
The new zones will be located near points of interest including large academic buildings, the CSULB Library, University Theater and athletic venues. These zones have also been outfitted with high visibility signage, wayfinding markers and ADA accessible ramps.
The new, no-fee cellphone waiting area will be created in the south turnaround on upper campus and will function similarly to what is seen at most airports. Drivers will be able to park in these spaces temporarily without purchasing a parking permit, contact their passengers and then move to that zone on campus to complete their pick-up. It is important that individuals always stay with their vehicles when using these spaces and do not remain past the 15-minute time limit. The spaces will be monitored and unattended vehicles will be cited.
