Social Work students study abroad in Germany

Junior Spring Semester Abroad in Hamburg, Germany

The “Junior Spring Semester Abroad” program allows CSULB social work undergraduate students to gain an international experience by studying for a semester in Hamburg, Germany but without extending time to graduation. Classes are in English (HAW-Hamburg: Social Workand give an insight into the expertise of German and European social work, transferring as credit for the CSULB social work program. The program also includes the Spring semester compulsory 80-hour practicum experience with local organizations.

Since 2008, California State University, Long Beach has been partnered with Hamburg University of Applied Sciences in Germany. With its 1.8 million inhabitants, Hamburg is Germany's second-largest city after Berlin and an international port. Living and studying in Hamburg provides students with a wide range of insights into different cultures and lifestyles as well as social issues and their solutions in a modern urban community. Its undergraduate programs prepare students for a diverse range of social occupations and work in childhood education. They reflect the complexity of social work in a modern society.

Read what previous CSULB social work students say about their experience in Hamburg:

Liz Rodriguez wrote of her practicum experience: “I am grateful to have experienced how Germany’s legal framework and support system help sex workers operate in safer environments while respecting human rights and self-determination.” Read more: HAW-Hamburg: Gilman-DAAD scholarship student at HAW Hamburg

Raquel Paz wrote of her study experience: “The classes are super hands-on. You work with classmates on projects or mini presentations. I love that it is an open dialogue; a conversation.” Read more: HAW-Hamburg: Study abroad and be a change-maker

Elizabeth Rivas describes her practicum experience: “The opportunity to complete my practicum at “Spiel Tiger” and work with refugee children also drew me into coming to this university over any others. A major takeaway from my time with Spiel Tiger is that "play is international" and no language is needed to share in games or laughter.” Read more: HAW-Hamburg: A huge step of faith to study abroad in Germany
