Research Mentor News, October 2018
Apply for BUILD Equipment Awards by Friday, Oct. 26, 2018
The Mid-Size Equipment Awards Program, funded through BUILD, provides the opportunity for BUILD faculty mentors to acquire equipment valued at less than $25,000 (with a $10,000 minimum) that is justified on the basis of direct benefit to BUILD student training. Awards up to $24,999 will provide support for the purchase of midsize equipment (equipment costing between $10,000 and $24,999; awards cannot be combined as part of the purchase of large equipment). BUILD student participation and training need to be clearly integrated into the research plan for use of the equipment. We anticipate being able to fund 2-3 proposals for this program. Funds for this Mid-Size Equipment Awards Program must be spent before Thursday, May 30, 2019.
The Small Equipment and Computers Awards Program, funded through BUILD, provides the opportunity for BUILD faculty mentors to acquire computers and/or small equipment (between $2,500-$10,000) that are justified on the basis of direct benefit to BUILD student training. Awards up to $10,000 will provide support for the purchase of lab computers and/or small equipment (equipment costing between $2,500 and $10,000; awards cannot be combined as part of the purchase of large equipment). BUILD student participation and training need to be clearly integrated into the research plan for use of the equipment. We anticipate being able to fund 3-4 proposals for this program. Funds for this Small Equipment and Computers Awards Program must be spent before Thursday, May 30, 2019.
Applications Due: Friday, Oct. 26, 2018, by 5 p.m. PT. Check the BUILD website for details.

The second BUILD Colloquium is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 9, from 9 to 9:50 am and will feature Dr. Leonardo Leon, Postdoctoral Scholar in the lab of Dr. Asa Gustafsson, School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science at UC San Diego. Dr. Leon is an alumnus of the CSULB Biochemistry B.S. and RISE program. The following Q&A reception will be for CNSM BUILD trainees. If your mentee(s) is from CNSM, please note that attendance for this event is mandatory and they will be unavailable to work in your lab during this time.
What Are Your Career Development Tips?
November is National Career Development Month and we’d like to share your tips for developing a successful career in research with the BUILD trainees. These tips should be succinct—no more than two sentences. Please send your best tip to the Digital Media & Communications Specialist no later than Monday, Oct. 15.
Annual Conference Attendance
A select few of our Engineering trainees have been approved by the University to attend the SACNAS conference. Those BUILD students will depart for San Antonio, Texas, to attend the conference on Thursday, Oct. 11, and will return to California on Monday, Oct. 14. If your mentee is a Year 1 Scholar and will be attending, they will not be available to work in your lab around that time. Please plan accordingly. If your mentee submitted an abstract that is selected for presentation, please work with them to update their posters from the Summer Symposium.
Year 1 Scholars who did not attend SACNAS will be attending the ABRCMS conference to be held Wednesday, Nov. 14, through Saturday, Nov. 17, in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Year 1 Scholars Share Their Thoughts about SURGE 2018
Every summer, the new class of Year 1 Scholars and Fellows, as well as those Year 2 and Year 3 Scholars who stayed on campus, attend CSULB BUILD’s Summer Undergraduate Research Gateway to Excellence (SURGE) program. Read about their thoughts and experiences here.

Acknowledging BUILD in your presentations/publications
Please remember to acknowledge the funding from National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health under Award Numbers UL1GM118979, TL4GM118980, and RL5GM118978 on work supported by BUILD, including support from BUILD student trainees, mentor appreciation fund, BUILD research and equipment grants. For a sample acknowledgment statement, NIH resources and policy, please visit the “Acknowledging BUILD in Your Publications” page on our website. It can be found under Mentors > Current Mentors.
Be Prepared
If you'd like to know what is coming up in the BUILD Learning Community for your mentee, download the current syllabus. This will give you a heads up on what events your mentee is required to attend and therefore will not be available to work in your lab at that time. This page will be updated each semester with the new syllabi.
