BUILD Internal Awards
Equipment Awards Programs
The Mid-Size Equipment Awards Program, funded through BUILD, provides the opportunity for BUILD faculty mentors to acquire equipment valued at less than $25,000 (with a $10,000 minimum) that is justified on the basis of direct benefit to BUILD student training. Awards up to $24,999 will provide support for the purchase of midsize equipment (equipment costing between $10,000 and $24,999; awards cannot be combined as part of the purchase of large equipment). BUILD student participation and training need to be clearly integrated into the research plan use of the equipment. Please click on the following link to learn more about the Mid-Size Equipment Awards Program.
The Small Equipment and Computers Awards Program, funded through BUILD, provides the opportunity for BUILD faculty mentors to acquire computers and/or small equipment (between $2,500-$10,000) that are justified on the basis of direct benefit to BUILD student training. Awards up to $10,000 will provide support for the purchase of lab computers and/or small equipment (equipment costing between $2,500 and $10,000; awards cannot be combined as part of the purchase of large equipment). BUILD student participation and training need to be clearly integrated into the research plan use of the equipment. Please click on the following link to learn more about the Small Equipment and Computers Awards Program.
Awards will provide support for the purchase of equipment. Awards cannot be combined as part of the purchase of large equipment. BUILD student participation and training need to be clearly integrated into the research plan for use of the equipment. Funds must be spent before May 30.
Restrictions and Limit on Number of Submissions
This award is limited to faculty who are part of the BUILD mentor pool. Preference may be given to proposals that benefit multiple BUILD students. An individual may be listed (PI or Co-Investigator) on only one proposal. Priority will be given to those PIs that have not received funding in the past. Individuals with three previous awards (CRSG or RSG grant, or equipment awards) are no longer eligible to apply.
Proposal Review
The applications will be evaluated by the BUILD Internal Project Review Sub-Committee that includes broad representation across health-related research disciplines. Budgets must follow the same rules/spending limitations as federal grants.
Submission Method
Download the Application provided below and submit the completed application to BUILD.IDC@csulb.edu. Please submit Biographical Sketches for all key personnel, a Confidential Personal Data Form and any other supporting documentation.
Course Redesign Program
The Research Across the Curriculum: Course Redesign Program, funded through BUILD, provides an opportunity for faculty to submit a proposal for integrating research into an existing course. Specifically, the goal of is program is to have faculty engage in a redesign of the course to exemplify how specific disciplines engage in research by having students take part in hands-on activities and demonstrations in the classroom. Faculty are encouraged to redesign the course to facilitate the incorporation of these activities. Faculty teaching a course that has a laboratory component can also submit proposals to redesign existing course activities to introduce novel scientific approaches. Funding includes 3 units of release time. Please click on the following link to learn more about the Research Across the Curriculum: Course Redesign Program.
External Grant Review Program
The BUILD Initiative is being undertaken to strengthen student training and education aimed at enhancing preparation for doctoral studies and success in health-related research careers among underrepresented and underserved students. An essential component of this initiative is to advance faculty and campus research competitiveness and capacity. BUILD faculty with external funding is a critical foundation for delivering excellent research training that prepares students to be successful in highly competitive doctoral programs and health-related research careers. Towards this end, BUILD is developing the External Grant Review Program to provide faculty with feedback before submission of an external grant application to NIH or NSF from an experienced faculty at one of our R1 partners (UCI or USC). Please click on the following link to learn more about the External Grant Review Program.
Off-Campus Grant Writing Support Program
BUILD support to attend off-campus grant writing workshop program. An important goal of BUILD is to increase faculty knowledge about common pitfalls and effective and concise proposal writing approaches with an overall aim of increasing the success of grant applications by BUILD faculty. Thus, BUILD faculty that would like to attend a professional off-campus grant writing workshop can submit a request to receive funding for registration and if necessary travel (hotel and airfare). A maximum of $1,500 can be requested to be able to attend and participate in the grant writing workshop. Budget requests should be well justified, including the rationale for any travel-related expenses. Requests will be accepted on an on-going basis until funding runs out. We anticipate funding 5-6 requests per year. To submit a request, please send an email to BUILD.IDC@csulb.edu with the following information: 1) Letter requesting financial support for the workshop, including a plan and timeline for submitting a grant proposal, as well as a detailed budget request; 2) Workshop information specifics (include link to more information or brochure); 3) Letter of support from the Department Chair endorsing the participation in the workshop. Funded requests will require travel authorization (at least 30 days in advance) and submission of a final report after the workshop.
Funding for Online Research Training Modules
BUILD will provide funds to faculty (or a team of faculty) members to develop online research training activities for students. The modules should provide a complete training activity for students that covers both information and practice on a selected topic. Examples include, but are not limited to, online modules on research enhancement skills such as coding and advanced statistical techniques with practice data/application and development of data/samples and approach for simulated data analysis and validation of the results. Alternatively, you might consider doing video-taped demonstrations of an essential laboratory benchwork technique such as Western Blotting that could be posted for students. The support will be provided as $500-$1000 additional summer salary (taxable) per proposal. The award amount will be determined based on the scope of work. Supplies are not supported. The finished product is expected to be made freely available to the CSULB BUILD program and the campus community. We expect to fund 2-4 proposals per college. Interested faculty can submit a 1-page proposal to BUILD.mentors@csulb.edu. The proposal should include learning/training objective(s) and outcome(s), details of the training activities, deliverables, estimated length of module, timeline, and estimate hours of work. It should also include the target audience (e.g., Introductory Materials for XXX Majors; students in labs conducting XXX analyses; Upper Division Students in XXX Majors, etc.). Proposals will be accepted/reviewed on a rolling basis and awarded based on availability of funds.
