UCI Field Trip

On July 10, 46 of our upper division BUILD scholars and four BUILD faculty and staff went on a field trip to the UC Irvine campus (UCI is one of our BUILD research partners) to see what life would be like as a graduate student.

They had the opportunity to meet with members of the UCI Graduate Preparation and Recruitment Program to learn about funded summer research opportunities that CSULB students can apply for in order to work in UCI labs that are part of its doctoral research programs.

They also toured the entire campus as well as specific research labs representing behavioral neuroscience, chemistry and biomedical engineering.

During lunch, they spoke with two CSULB alumni who are currently graduate students in UCI’s behavioral neuroscience and pharmacology doctoral programs and who have been awarded prestigious awards for their research. They were very inspiring and helped answer questions that BUILD scholars had about the application process, transitioning from CSULB to UCI, and working in a research lab.

Finally, the day ended with the BUILD scholars meeting Frances Leslie, vice provost for graduate education, and Michael Mulligan, associate dean of biological sciences. They strongly encouraged our CSULB students to apply for their summer research program and doctoral programs. After a long day, our BUILD scholars left motivated.
