CIO'S MESSAGE - October 26, 2017
New Ransomware Alert – Bad Rabbit
Please be aware that a new ransomware outbreak called Bad Rabbit is targeted at organizations within USA, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Germany, Bulgaria, and Estonia.
Bad Rabbit pretends to be an Adobe Flash update. It attempts to trick users into thinking that they need to click on it to install updates to their Adobe software. If a user falls prey to the ransomware, the infected computer will be locked and hackers will demand money to unlock the computer.
In order to protect yourself, please don’t install any Adobe Flash updates from pop-up windows and always back up or save important files using university provided storage (share drives or OneDrive). Instead, go to Adobe’s website directly to install updates. Please use care with your personal devices, and back up your files regularly to external storage devices.
If you have University owned computing devices, please contact your College or Department technology coordinator or Technology Help Desk at (562) 985-4959 for assistance in backing up your data.
If you have questions about this advisory note or may be concerned about the validity of this message, please contact DoIT-ServiceManagement@csulb.edu or the Technology Help Desk at (562) 985-4959.
