CIO'S MESSAGE - January 30, 2018
An Important Alert of a New Dangerous Phishing Email
Dear Colleagues,
Please be aware of a very complex email phishing scam that has affected several universities and multiple companies in recent days. The subject of the phishing attack is "FedEx Delivery Notification." The way in which this phishing email works is that you receive an email disguised as a FedEx email saying a package could not be delivered and asks you to click on a link to print out a mailing label that be brought to a local FedEx office to pickup the package. Once you click on the link, you are taken to a website that will force the download of a malicious file, which will in turn infect your computer.
The phishing email is reported to look similar to this screenshot below:
Be on the lookout for these suspicious emails with attachments or links that you have not requested or are not expecting. If you don’t recognize it, don’t open it. If you open an email attachment or go to a suspicious website in error and your computer performs adversely, please contact your department/college technical coordinator or Technology Help Desk at (562) 985-4959 for assistance.
If you have questions about this advisory note or may be concerned about the validity of this message, please contact DoIT-ServiceManagement@csulb.edu or the Technology Help Desk at (562) 985-4959.
