CSU HSI-STEM Peer Mentoring & Programming Module

The CSU HSI-STEM Peer Mentoring & Programming Module highlights the best mentoring practices and activities at each of the 10 CSU partner campuses.

In episode 1, Director of the Attract, Inspire, Mentor, and Support Students (AIMS2) program, Dr. Ramesh, and Student Services Support Coordinator, Josefina Gudino provided an overview of the AIMS2 peer mentoring program at CSU Northridge. Additionally, CSU Northridge transfer students and participants of the AIMS2 mentorship program, Ashley Kuhnley and Suzanne Fisher, shared their perspectives on the challenges and successes they experienced as former mentees and mentors of the program. Ashley and Suzanne then shared how peer mentors are matched with mentees, explained the training process for peer mentors, and discussed the various points of communication employed by the peer mentors to cultivate strong mentor-mentee relationships.

 

In episode 2, Student Programs Coordinator, Lark Crumpler, of the HSI-STEM Si Puedo project at CSU Long Beach shared her experiences with planning, implementing, and processing the 2021 Excellence through a Community of Engaged Learners (EXCEL) peer mentor summer training program. Specifically, Lark provided an in-depth explanation of the six guiding questions that were used to develop the EXCEL peer mentoring training program. The EXCEL program provides mentoring and tutoring to STEM freshmen and transfer students through a learning community in the colleges of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (CNSM) and Engineering (COE) at CSU Long Beach. 

 

In episode 3, STEM Transfer Success Specialist, Elizabeth Monroe, from the Warriors on the Way (WOW) 2 STEM program at CSU Stanislaus provided an overview of the WOW2STEM peer mentoring program. She was joined by two WOW2STEM transfer student peer mentors, Lizbeth Solis and Cassie Moua, who shared their insights on the role and responsibilities of a peer mentor, tips and advice for peer mentors, and an overview of the program activities employed to engage and better support WOW2STEM mentees. 

 

In episode 4, STEM Success Laboratory Technician, Leah Young-Chung, from the STEM Discovery Academy (SDA) Peer Mentorship program at CSU Stanislaus provided an overview of the topics and activities that make up the SDA peer mentoring training program, which included an in-depth look at the role and responsibilities of a peer mentor, the structured activities that fostered sense of belonging among peer mentorsthe cultivation of communication skills, scenario role playing activities, and mental health and stress management issues.
