Why Major in Economics?
Economics is a social science that researches people and how they use their resources with a focus on the economic well-being of society. Our programs are excellent preparation for careers in business, government, law, and education.
A bachelor’s degree in economics, particularly our BA in Mathematical Economics and Economic Theory, is a great foundation for graduate programs in economics, law, public administration, international affairs, environmental science, management science, or business. A degree in economics also has higher mid-career salaries than finance, accounting, and business majors.
At CSULB, upper-division students can expect a smaller classroom size, guaranteeing more individual attention from faculty.
Three Majors, Two Minors, One Graduate Program
Our department offers three areas of emphasis: Economics, Business Economics, Mathematical Economics, and Economic Theory, two minors in International Economics and Economics, and one master's program in Economics.
All Juniors can participate in the Beach EDGE (Expedited Degrees in Graduate Education) program and begin double counting ten units of three M.A. courses towards an undergraduate and graduate degree. See more here.

Majors
Economics B.A.
Our Economics B.A. prepares students for various careers in business and government. This degree also provides the foundation for teaching in elementary and secondary schools and advanced study in economics, business, law, and related fields.
Business Economics B.A.
Our B.A. in Business Economics provides students with tools for economic analysis and application in a business environment. Students prepare for careers in the private or public sector. Those completing this major will have a solid foundation in microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, and quantitative methods. They will have also completed courses in international economics and business administration. Students are well prepared for graduate study in economics, business administration, public administration, and law.
Mathematical Economics and Economic Theory B.A.
Our B.A. in Mathematical Economics and Economic Theory provides students with the tools of economic analysis with an emphasis on economic theory, economic optimization, and statistics. This option is recommended for students interested in graduate study in economics.
The WASC Senior College & University Commission (WSCUC) has approved these degrees for distance education.
Minors
International Economics Minor
The Minor in International Economics is a 15-unit program available to all students outside our department. Those who have declared a major in Economics, Business Economics, or Economics Option in Mathematical Economics and Economic Theory may not add an Economics minor.
Economics Minor
The Minor in Economics is an 18-unit program available all to students outside our department. Those who have declared a major in Economics, Business Economics, or Economics Option in Mathematical Economics and Economic Theory may not add an Economics minor.
