Dr. Yutian Chen is a professor and chair of Economics at California State University, Long Beach. She received her Ph.D. from SUNY Stony Brook in 2007. Her research interests include industrial organization, game theory, and interdisciplinary study of the application of game theory in network and reinforcement learning. Her research has been supported by an NSF grant, with which she has been able to guide and support several graduate and undergraduate student research. Her research articles have been published in leading journals including the International Journal of Industrial Organization, Journal of Economics, Naval Research Logistics, and ACM Transactions on Sensor Networks. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, cooking, and traveling.

Dr. Kairon Shayne D. Garcia is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Economics at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). She holds a PhD in Economics from Washington State University (WSU) and bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of the Philippines.

Kai’s research focuses on applied microeconomics and econometrics, particularly on causal inference in labor economics, economics of education, and development. Her recent work examines the effects of COVID-19 school closures on parental employment and student outcomes. Her current research projects investigate factors affecting remote work in the U.S., the impact of climate change adaptation on labor and productivity, and the role of lobbying and environmental regulation faced by firms in select European countries.

Previously, Kai taught various economics courses at WSU, where she received the 2023 School of Economic Sciences Excellence in Teaching Award. Kai’s professional background also includes roles as a research consultant at the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank - Philippines and as an Economic Development Specialist for the National Economic and Development Authority in the Philippines.

Jack W. Hou is a Professor of Economics at California State University, Long Beach. He received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1989. 

He was President of the Chinese Economists Society in 2007-08, President of the Western Social Science Association in 2010-11, and an officer of the Western Economic Association. He was the senior coeditor of the Contemporary Economic Policy (CEP) till 2010 and was re-appointed as the Specialized Co-Editor of CEP in 2014. He has served as an Associate Editor for Economic Modeling since 2018 and on the editorial board of numerous economic journals. He has also served as Managing Guest Editor for China Economic Review, Journal of Asian Economics, Journal of Chinese Economic and Business Studies and Journal of Family and Economic Issues, and Guest Editor of Sage Open. 

He is a University Fellow Professor at Nankai University, an Adjunct Chair Professor at Jinan University, among others. Most recently, an honorary Chair Professor at Liaoning University (China) and Senior Academic Fellow, at Universitas Airlangga (Indonesia).

He has been the keynote speaker (either at the opening ceremony or closing ceremony) at various conferences in the U.S., Germany, France, the Czech Republic, Japan, Canada, and China. 

He has published extensively in refereed journals in North America, Europe, and Asia; and contributed Chapters to many books. His research focuses on the Chinese Economy, Labor Economics, International Trade/Finance, and Economic History. His most recent interest has shifted to environment, sustainability, and finance.

Professional Experience: Professor of Economics, 2009-current, California State University, Long Beach CA.  Associate Professor Economics, 2005-2009, California State University at Long Beach.  Visiting Assistant Professor of Economics, Tufts University, 2001-2005, Medford, MA, University of Akron, Assistant Professor of Economics, 1997-2001.   

Dr. Yamarik researches U.S. regional growth, the effects of trade agreements, cultural institutions on international trade, and economic instruction.  He has published 35 articles in leading peer-reviewed economics journals including Economics Letters, Journal of International Economics, Review of Economics and Statistics, Review of International Economics, and The Journal of Economic Education. He is currently working on the distributional effects of Fed policy on U.S. states, the role of culture in bilateral tourist flows, and the rise of populism in Europe.

He is married and has a son Sam, 16, and a daughter Anna, 12.  He enjoys cooking, reading, and playing ice hockey – which he has done for 50+ years.

Harvey Baldovino is a PhD Candidate in Economics (ABD) at Claremont Graduate University. He also holds an MA in Economics from the University of the Philippines – Los Banos. He is currently an economics lecturer at CSU Long Beach, CSU Fullerton, Riverside City College and Rio Hondo College. He also serves as the Economics Core Consultant at Claremont Graduate University. His research interests include all aspects of the international economy; international money and finance, international trade, international development and international organizations. He is currently involved in research projects on various issues surrounding International Monetary Fund (IMF) lending programs in emerging markets and developing economies. He is happily married with two kids.
