Wilderness Studies Certificate
The Certificate in Wilderness Studies is offered through the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies. This certificate provides students and with a comprehensive foundation of wilderness travel and outdoor technical skill development and practice as they apply in an outdoor context in selected natural environments. The 15 unit Certificate in Wilderness Studies incorporates the knowledge and skills of outdoor leadership, outdoor trip planning, outdoor programming, and related technical skills. The certificate reflects the students’ ability to learn outdoor skills and techniques for working or participating in various outdoor programs and environments.
Note: Students may only pursue this certificate program in combination with a CSULB degree program.
Admissions requirements are as follows:
1. Completion of 30 units of course work;
2. A minimum 2.75 GPA in all completed course work.
1. Students must submit a resume of outdoor field experiences
2. Complete a combination of the following coursework for 15 units
Take any of the following-for a total of 9 units
- REC 337 - Outdoor Education and Interpretation (3 units)
- REC 430 - Recreation in the Ocean Environment (3 units)
- REC 431 - Recreation Resource Management (3 units)
- REC 433 - Management of Organized Camps (3 units)
- REC 434 - Adventure Education Programming and Leadership (3 units)
- REC 435 - Human Dimensions and Management in Experiential Education (3 units)
Take any combination of the following for 6 units
- REC 242 - Backpacking (2 units)
- REC 243C - Desert Expedition (3 units)
- REC 244 - Kayaking (2 units)
- REC 243A - Winter Mountain Expedition (2 units)
- REC 245 - Wilderness Water Expedition (3 units)
- REC 247A - Techniques of Rock Climbing (2 units)
- REC 246A - Mountaineering (2 units)
