Highlights:

  • Students planned and performed Leave No Trace (LNT) skits to creatively demonstrate their knowledge of this curriculum. Very entertaining and educational!
  • We spent a half day kayaking, during which we got up close and personal with Catalina's kelp forests, spotting a few native species: Garibaldi fish, By the Wind Sailor polyps, harbor seals, Brandt's cormorants, and a Bald Eagle flying above!
  • We had evening campfires with group circles focusing on community building. Students and Instructors facilitated games and thoughtful discussions.
  • Students played a teambuilding game about communication that set us up for success before paddling in tandem kayaks.
  • We wrapped up Sunday's on-land activities with a hike and native plant identification.
  • No serious illness, injuries, or group conflicts. Yay! (We had a few students and one instructor who experienced seasickness during the boat rides and kayaking, but we were able to manage symptoms.)

Select Student Self-Reflections (part of ELC assignment):

  • "This was an amazing trip! I had so much fun meeting new people, working with others, and using communication skills. I've gained more experience on cooking and making/planning for meals."
  • "I gained new friends, new memories, and some great new plant knowledge on our morning hike on Sunday."
  • "I had a great time overall on this trip. It was a bit different than I had originally expected but in the best way possible. I gained new skills about camping with strangers and being able to communicate and work together. I learned to be out of my comfort zone, just be with other people."
  • "I feel like I achieved my goal in becoming more self-sufficient when it comes to recreational activities.,,, I also really enjoyed kayaking and I also learned more about different marine life native to Catalina."
  • "While kayaking on our ELC, I learned the importance of communication with my partner while on the tandem kayak."

"If I could take this class again, I would. Everyone was so welcoming and the environment we were in was positive. I never camped before or kayaked so I'm leaving knowing the basics.... Overall, I had a great time and would highly recommend this class to anyone and everyone.
