Cara Richards-Tutor
Dr. Catherine (Cara) Richards-Tutor completed her Ph.D in 2004 at University of California, Santa Barbara in Special Education, Risk, and Disability Studies. Prior to completing her doctorate at UCSB she taught in both general and special education and worked with families as a behavior specialist . Her research and publications mainly focus on interventions for students at-risk for learning disabilities and English Learners as well as the Response to Intervention Model. Dr. Richards-Tutor has served as Co-PI for several large scale studies including the Center for Research on the Educational Achievement and Teaching of English Language Learners (CREATE) and Project EQALS, which examined a professional development model for general and special education high school algebra teachers. She has several books and book chapters that focus on interventions for English Learners, most recently Response to Intervention and English Learners: Using the SIOP model published with Pearson . Dr. Richards-Tutor works with local schools to develop and implement Multi-tiered Systems of Support, inlcuding RTI and PBIS. She has research published in several prominent special education journals, including Exceptional Children, Learning Disabiliities Research and Practice, and Assessment for Effective Intervention. She also serves on the executive board for the Council for Exceptional Children's Division of Research.
