Data For Teachers
This workshop has concluded. Please enjoy the recording on the ATS MediaSpace site: Data for Teachers.
Description
In this workshop, we will discuss pragmatic Canvas data for day-to-day use along with a bit of data you can use to leverage your course design. Diving deeper, we will look at tangible tools for accessing student learning insights in Canvas including performance, engagement, grades, and quizzes. A demonstration of various features such as the 'People' tab, grade book, new analytics, quiz statistics, course statistics, and the progress tracking system in Canvas will be presented.
Discussion Points
- 'People' Tab for Student Activity Tracking
We'll show you how to view individual student stats, including time spent in the course, last activity, and grades. - Grade Book
We'll demonstrate setting up your grade book and how to use filters and sorting options to customize the display. With this tool, you can export grades and flag late or missing assignments. - New Analytics
- We'll explain how to enable the new analytics button in the settings and navigation menu.
- We'll cover how to view course averages, assignments, and quizzes, and how to compare individual student performance to the course average.
- We'll highlight the messaging feature, where faculty can message students about their activity or performance, such as viewing course resources or participating in discussions. Faculty can also run reports on missing assignments or late submissions with this tool.
- Quiz Statistics
By using quiz statistics, faculty can identify gaps in knowledge and understanding. We'll demonstrate how to access and interpret the data, including average scores, highest and lowest scores, standard deviation, and average completion time. - Course Statistics
Analyze your course statistics to inform course design, including the composition of the course, the type of assignments, and the number of discussions and posts. By looking at course statistics, you can determine if you need a to change up variability in your course activities and assessments, so students are engaged and universal design for learning is considered. - Progress Tracking System in Modules
The progress tracking system in their modules shows whether students have accessed certain modules and completed required activities to move on to the next one. We'll demonstrate how to set up the system, including ordering modules, setting prerequisites, adding requirements for students to complete before progressing, and locking modules until a certain point in the semester.
