Services for Visitors

In addition to supporting the instructional and research needs of the CSULB faculty, students and staff, the University Library also fills a role as a community resource and as such provides a variety of services to visitors.

Visitors to the library (anyone without a valid CSULB ID number and password), have access to the services listed below.

  • *Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) members are entitled to the same privileges and services as CSU Alumni.  They must present their CSULB ID card at the front desk to activate privileges.
  •  Any services not specifically authorized on this page are prohibited.

Available Services:

  • Access to library books and other materials in open collections
  • Access to federal and state government publications
  • Assistance in locating collections and services
  • Research assistance including basic instruction for the online catalog
  • Referrals to library collections and services outside of the CSULB Library
  • Access to OneSearch, our web based catalog (not including access to eBooks in most cases).
  • Access to most of our academic databases only from designated computers in the Library with a 90-minute guest pass.
    • A government issued photo ID will be required to register for your 90-minute guest pass. 
    • There is also a list of open-access/free databases that can be accessed remotely.
  • Self-service photocopying and printing (10¢ per page)
  • WiFi access via beachnet-guest-access

Library Cards:

While we strive to create accounts on demand, technological or personnel issues may result in a delay, and there may be times when we cannot issue new library accounts. Thank you for your patience in this matter. In order to apply for an account, you must provide your Social Security card.  Community Borrowers must have their Social Security card with them at the time of application. A government issued photo I.D. will also be required to register.

Services NOT Available to visitors:

  • Spidell Technology Center computers can only be used with a 90-minute guest pass.
    • A government issued photo ID will be required to register for your 90-minute guest pass.
  • There is no Interlibrary loan (CSU+ and BeachReach services) for visitors.
  • There is no access to Course Reserves materials for visitors.
  • Librarians do not provide course-specific instruction to visitors.
  • There is no remote (out of library) access to our licensed databases 
  • There is no access to Library scanners.

Accommodation Requests

The Library’s goal is to provide access to all of our patrons. Visitors with disabilities should speak to our staff at Circulation regarding their accommodation requests.  Reasonable accommodation requests will be reviewed in accordance with University policy.

Faculty & Staff Emeriti:

Emeriti retain the same privileges as their prior employment allowed. Please note that accounts may not automatically be updated to reflect emeritus status and that individuals may need to work with CSULB Human Resources for configuration; proof of CSU-ERFSA membership may be required. Faculty, see the Services for Faculty page for more information.
