The First In My Family To Attend College
At CSULB, I am pursuing a psychology degree with a minor in sociology. I am also a student assistant for the University Outreach & School Relations office. I am the first person in my family to go to a four-year university directly after high school. Despite all the pressure being a college student, it is amazing to know I’m paving the way for my family. I’m extremely proud and fortunate for this educational opportunity.
When I was a freshman in high school, I had no aspirations to go to college. At the time, I didn't think college would be useful or even achievable, so I completely dismissed it as an option for my future. Once I took my first psychology class my junior year, I realized this was the right field for me, so I decided to pursue higher education.
It took a lot of sacrifice and hard work in high school to apply, complete FAFSA, pursue scholarships and learn about financial literacy. I was making one of the biggest decisions to choose where I would spend the next four years of my life. Since no one else in my family was familiar with this process, it was up to me to educate myself and make it happen.
In the end, it was completely worth it. I wouldn't trade this journey for anything else. I have learned to trust myself and know that I am capable of accomplishing anything I put my mind to. CSULB has given me so many valuable opportunities, resources and experiences. It has certainly shifted the trajectory of my life for the better, not only for myself, but also for my family.
