Social Work at The Beach

Starting my first year at CSULB, I entered the university as a major in health care administration. However, I recognized that I had no passion for this discipline and wanted to explore other majors to see what was a better fit. After exploring various majors with my Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) counselor, I discovered a passion for social work, which was based on various personal experiences.

Growing up, I admired those older in my family, especially my grandmother, who raised me until I entered college. In 2017, my grandmother was admitted to hospice, receiving care and services until she passed. During this experience, I recognized that many individuals underutilize hospice and palliative care due to various factors such as limited access to information and cultural/language barriers. This life-changing experience with my grandmother motivated me to change majors and pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work (BASW) and a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree.

I want to advocate for individuals and their families and help them navigate end-of-life challenges. My career objective is to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) to better assist individuals in overcoming life challenges related to aging and end-of-life. The BASW and MSW program at CSULB has provided me with the tools and knowledge to succeed as a social worker.
