Community Highlight – Public Service Corps Experience

During my time with the Long Beach Public Service Corps, I had the privilege of working in the Department of Health and Human Services, specifically within the Office of Youth Development in the Collective Impact Bureau.
I spent my days at the Ron Arias Health Equity Center, collaborating with the Futures First program, which was developed in partnership with the Office of Youth Development, the April Parker Foundation, and the Pacific Gateway Workforce Innovation Network. The Futures First program is designed to re-engage Transition Age Youth (TAY) and opportunity youth in Long Beach, ages 16 to 26. The program offers a range of services, including one-on-one coaching, holistic retreats, work readiness training, housing support, and more.
My role primarily involved assisting with marketing and outreach for the Futures First program. This included tabling at city events and career fairs held at local schools. One of the highlights was my time at the Long Beach School of Adults, where I engaged with students and shared information about the program.
Additionally, I helped organize our inaugural “Youth Day in the LBC,” held on May 5th, 2024, at Cabrillo High School. This event featured a youth town hall led by mayor Rex Richardson and included Long Beach native and artist Vince Staples. We facilitated youth-led group discussions, provided food and performances, and hosted a resource fair, creating a space for young people to connect and share their voices.
The Long Beach Public Service Corps offered us not only the chance to engage with our community but also professional development opportunities. We received free headshot photos, resume and cover letter assistance, and stipends for work clothing and transportation. Additionally, we had the chance to attend workshops led by city officials and employees covering various topics such as human resources, civil service, innovation in government, and equity in the city.
As a result of my experience with the Long Beach Public Service Corps fellowship, I am now proud to serve on HUD's Youth Homelessness Systems Improvement Board. In this role, I will collaborate with cross-systems committee members to create, and conduct needs assessments and implement new social services aimed at ending youth homelessness and expanding access to mental health services. Additionally, I work as a clerical aide at the Long Beach Housing Authority. This work is particularly meaningful to me as I was a homeless youth living in transitional housing just a month ago, and I am driven by my desire to advocate for others facing similar challenges.
My experience with the Long Beach Public Service Corps was transformative. I gained practical skills, expanded my network, and contributed to initiatives that positively impact youth in Long Beach. I am grateful for the opportunity to work alongside dedicated individuals and organizations committed to fostering a brighter future for young people in our community. This experience has deepened my passion for public service and equipped me with the tools to continue making a difference.
