Meet Dr. Sam Lee, Our New Faculty Member!
Sam (they/he) is a native New Yorker (shout out Queens), secondary educator, and bread connoisseur. In their free time, Sam loves playing volleyball and supporting local drag queens.
Sam earned a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Boston College, an MSE in Literacy Education (5-12) from Fordham University and a BA in Biology and Secondary Education from Boston College.
Generally, Sam’s research focuses on the design of learning environments (i.e., professional learning, curriculum, etc.) where educators position racialized bi/multilingual students’ multiple ways of communication as a part of rather than apart from science learning. Specifically, they are curious about the ways in which language can be used to expand how we "figure out" the natural and designed world.
Sam previously worked on the NSF DRK-12 project, Supporting teacher customizations of curriculum materials for equitable student sensemaking in secondary science (Award #2101384). They were also a part of the OpenSciEd Middle School Developers Consortium, specifically responsible for the research, design, facilitation, and revision of the curriculum-based professional learning materials (www.openscied.org).
Sam is excited to meet new colleagues and learn more about CNSM, the Science Education department, and SoCal life.
