Training and Education
CSULB uses the CITI Program to provide trainings for Human Subjects and Animal Welfare research, Financial Conflicts of Interest, and to fulfill federal Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) requirements. Each of the RCR course offerings covers the core norms, principles, and rules governing the practice of responsible research.
RCR training is now part of funding requirements of both the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). RCR is increasingly viewed as an essential component of research training, regardless of a researcher’s source of funding. There is an RCR course specifically tailored to research administrators and additional CITI courses for those serving on the IRB and IACUC.

- Register to create an account.
- Select "California State University, Long Beach" as your Organization Affiliation and continue with the registration process.
- You can now select and complete your online courses at your leisure.
- Once you have completed a course, CITI will provide you with a Certificate of Completion. You are strongly encouraged to download documentation for your own records.
Responsible Conduct of Research Courses
To fulfill the Responsible Conduct of Research requirement, complete the module on Social & Behavioral Research – Basic course.

Human Subjects Courses
All researchers, faculty, students, and staff conducting research involving the use of human subjects, or accessing their private identifiable records, must complete the mandatory CITI trainings before IRB approval is granted and the research is initiated. To fulfill this CSULB Protection of Human Subjects requirement, complete the module on Social & Behavioral Research – Basic course.

Lab Animal Welfare Courses
To fulfill the minimum CSULB requirement for IACUC protocol submission, complete the module on "Working with the IACUC" Course. The IACUC may require additional modules depending on the nature of your research. All personnel who will be working with the animals must be listed on the protocol and must be trained.

Conflicts of Interest
The CITI Conflicts of Interest course offers basic background in the elements of the federal regulations on financial conflicts of interest and of strategies to apply in their practice.
At the conclusion of this activity learners will be able to:
- Recognize, manage and report financial conflicts of interest.
- Evaluate circumstances in their work where new COI regulations apply.
- Identify circumstances under which the researcher objectivity may potentially be affected by a COI.
- Distinguish among conflicts of commitment, conflicts of conscience, and institutional conflicts of interest.
- Identify strategies to manage these three forms of conflicts.
