February 20, 2020 | AFSE: Lend Me a Hand: A Bioengineering Challenge | Imagine you only had one hand, or only one functioning limb. How would you be able to do everyday things? What if an artificial hand or limb could be designed for you? This workshop will take you through the engineering design process as you learn about the form and function of the hand and limbs so that you can design and build several different working versions. Alberto Lazaro is an elementary teacher in Montebello Unified School District who incorporates lots of engineering, 3D printing and technology into his classes. This series of activities was inspired by students in his classroom! |
December 5, 2019 | AFSE: PhysTEC DemoDays - Forces and Motion | See some demonstrations and try out some labs which help teach about forces, motion and Newton's Laws. While the emphasis for this is middle and high school, elementary teachers will learn lots, too! |
November 20, 2019 | AFSE: Getting Outside for NGSS | Join Kurt Holland and learn to use the science education field's engaging secret weapon, carefully structured outdoor learning. Participants in this session get access to high-quality NGSS resources from Lawrence Hall of Science and learn how to manage outdoor instruction focused upon making sense of the world with the SEPS. |
November 12, 2019 | AFSE: NGSS and ELD - Some Ideas on Integrating Our Science and ELD Lessons | In this workshop you will participate in a series of NGSS lessons that are integrated with ELD and the arts for the upper elementary class. Come ready to be a student who experiences the lessons, as well as a teacher who reflects on the effectiveness of the integration strategies. |
October 2, 2019 | AFSE: Leveraging technology to address the 3 Dimensions of NGSS | Participants will engage in a 3D lesson that utilizes Google's Science Journal to show how built- in device features can be used as powerful science sensors and tools. |
September 30, 2019 | AFSE: Fun Science Lessons from 2019 Young Scientists Camp | For the past 20 years the Science Education Department has hosted a summer science camp for area youth. CSULB students work alongside a mentor teacher to prepare and teach science lessons for kids. Come find out about the camp and try your hand at some of their favorite lessons. |
September 18, 2019 | AFSE: K-3 Life Sciences - A Tapestry of Survival | Tapestry of Survival (K-3) looks at the progression of life science laterally. All participants will see how the lesson sequence was created and then participate in one-three activities in the sequence. During discussion, grade levels will be able to share their experiences and see how the lessons build. |

October 18, 2018 | AFSE: Engaging your students in our urban ocean | Join Linda Chilton from the USC Sea Grant Program as she facilitates Community based science initiatives to support student learning and involvement. The workshop will allow teachers to work with partners on identifying local coastal issues, data gaps and how students can take a role whether in designing questions to pursue or sharing their findings with community decision makers. |

After engaging with coastal climate connections outside the classroom, we will explore the California coast using satellite images to make sense of surf breaks, coastal ecosystems, and human impacts. We shall explore opportunities for your future students to become coastal stewards while learning science and provide access to high quality teaching resources from the California Coastal Commision, NOAA, and USC-Sea Grant. |
March 7, 2018 | AFSE: Science Beyond the Classroom | Everyone loves a school field trip, right? Well, maybe. It can be a lot of work for the teacher and given budget restrictions and concerns related to mandated testing, a source of concern for administrators. Do kids really learn in these spaces? Are field trips worth all the extra time and effort? Join Dr. Jim Kisiel from the Science Education department here at CSULB on a journey through the Science Learning Center here on campus. Learn about science learning in these spaces and explore ways to rethink the traditional school field trip and create a more meaningful and connected science learning experience. |
