Jeff Helton, PhD, CMA, CFE, FHFMA
Dr. Jeff Helton, CMA, CFE, FHFMA is a former health system chief financial officer with over 25
years’ experience. He is a lecturer in the health care administration program at Cal State Long
Beach, teaching health care finance in the undergraduate and graduate programs. He is Clinical
Professor of Health Care Finance at the University of Colorado Denver School of Business where
he teaches Health Care Finance, Health Economics, and Health Operations Management to
MBA students there.
Dr. Helton is author of the health care finance certification credential for the Healthcare
Financial Management Association and writes a column on healthcare innovation for the
industry journal Healthcare Financial Management: A Systems Perspective, now in its third
edition. He is also a Master Reviewer for Quality Matters and a big advocate of online learning.
He has a PhD in Healthcare Management from the University of Texas and a Master of Science
in Hospital Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a Fellow of the
Healthcare Financial Management Association. He also holds numerous industry credentials
including Certified Management Accountant, Certified Fraud Examiner. Certified Specialist in
Business Intelligence, Certified Specialist in Physician Practice Management, Certified Specialist
in Accounting and Finance, and Certified Associate in Health Information Systems.
