Instruction and Outreach Services

The Library Instruction Program at CSU Long Beach exists to promote the information literacy of students and faculty. Using a variety of methodologies, it will provide support for the curricular and research needs of the University in the context of essential learning skills developed by the AACU and adopted by the CSU and CSULB in 2008. While the primary focus of our program is focused on the essential outcome of information literacy (pdf), the outcomes for critical thinking (pdf) and inquiry and analysis (pdf) are also addressed in our educational efforts. Our mission parallels the University's mission to “promote intellectual and personal development … to prepare students for life-long learning…and to function as informed, contributing members of the community.”

The Instruction program will teach students to find, evaluate and use information effectively to enable them to fulfill their academic and intellectual needs. The program will incorporate a variety of teaching strategies and methodologies that reflect individual differences in learning level, style, and culture. The Library encourages collegiality and collaboration between teaching faculty and Library faculty. To this end, the program will develop and improve the information seeking skills of students, in partnership with the teaching faculty, to promote lifelong learning.

The goals of the Instruction Program include:

  • Develop instructional methods that reflect a diverse community of learners and accommodate a variety of learning styles. Methods include group/classroom instruction, and electronic and print instructional aids to create self sufficient independent learners.
  • Familiarize students with information tools and resources in their various forms and teaching research skills necessary to complete their academic assignments.
  • Establish opportunities for faculty and librarian collaboration in order to address students’ information needs within the context of the academic programs and curriculum.
  • Increase the recognition and usage of all library programs and services.
  • Continue to assess both instructional methods and content in order to meet the changing needs of the learning community.
