CLA Equity Scholars

Since the fall semester of 2021, the Equity Scholars Program has supported one graduate research assistantship per academic year (or two one-semester assistantships) for every CLA department offering a graduate degree (13 in total). The goal of this support of $7000 per student per year (or up to a maximum $3500 each for two students per semester, pending budget) has been to recruit promising students into the Humanities and Social Sciences. Recruitment of first-generation, historically underrepresented, and/or low-income graduate students is strongly encouraged. This recruitment initiative was designed to promote excellence in research and to support enhanced accessibility to the mentorship and research training of the Liberal Arts graduate experience.

The EQS initiative offers the following benefits:

  • Creating a preferential pathway for our talented CSULB undergraduates seeking graduate degrees, as well as an opportunity for local, regional, and state residents seeking to retrain or upskill;
  • Encouraging graduate role models for first-generation and historically underrepresented undergraduate students;
  • Enhancing the intellectual life of the college and uplifting the graduate community;
  • Contributing to a faculty pipeline for state education;
  • Building in and contributing to future access and equity;
  • Serving as a vital springboard to build partnerships, including with the city of Long Beach, locally based corporations, and businesses in order to support career pathways for first-generation, historically underrepresented and/or low-income students.

Robert Santino Martínez (English)

Meet Robert! He is from Highland Park in Northeast Los Angeles. He recently graduated from CSUDH with a BA in Labor Studies and a minor in English. It took him almost ten years to go back to school after receiving an AA from ELAC, but it was well worth waiting. He found the Labor Studies Program to be exactly what he needed after gaining so much experience working and organizing in the Los Angeles Community College District. There were so many opportunities to get involved with all the "Hot Labor Summer" activities while in school, whether it was on the picket lines or in protests, he and his peers showed up and showed out in solidarity with their union brothers and sisters. Shout out to all the folks at the Labor and Social Justice Club that organized! Outside of school, Robert has a wonderfully blended family with his fiancé: they have five beautiful girls, Summer, Marisa, Zoey, Natalie, and Amberly. When not busy with the family, he is either cooking or watching sports.

What are you most looking forward to in your graduate program?

I cannot wait to get started, as an English major it is always an exciting time when I get my syllabuses from my instructors and I can see what books are on there as the shape and structure of the class begins to take form. I love to fully immerse myself in the material and being in a graduate program like this one will give me a whole new lens to study the world around me.

What are your future goals or career plans for life post-grad?

After I receive my MA in English from CSULB I plan to teach at the community college level and eventually go back to school to obtain my PhD in either English or Education based on the experience I have in the classroom. What are you most looking forward to in your graduate program?

My mentor, along with several students, has established and maintained the Christa Wolf Lab, which serves as an opportunity for collaborative research and reading literature together as a collective real-time face to face activity. I am excited to be involved in this innovative project which takes the position that we have for too long taken for granted the idea that reading is a lonely or singular activity by default. We can read together! Throughout human history, reading has been a group activity. There is fertile ground to uncover in this approach.

What are your future goals or career plans for life post-grad?

I am still in a discovery phase for my future, but I have given serious thought to exploring the digital humanities, especially in terms of archiving important historical materials such as (for example) the DEFA East German film library at UMass Amherst.

Iliana Resendiz

Meet Iliana! Iliana graduated from UCLA with a B.A. in English in 2021 with a keen interest in teaching education. She upheld the stereotype that the only thing you can do with an English degree is teach. However, she found her educational journey so enriching and transformative that she wanted to pass this experience on to young new students.

She began her teaching career as an On-Site Coordinator for the UCLA Writer's Den delivering weekly creative writing classes to high school students at John R. Wooden High School. She continued teaching at Franklin Classical Middle School in Long Beach with the Design Make Learn, trained with Teach for America at Camino Nuevo Burlington Charter School, and briefly taught as a 10th-grade English teacher at Morningside High School.

However, she always stayed close to her community, working for her community college as an embedded tutor and subbing around charter schools in the greater LA area. While she remains dedicated to her students, she joined the MA program in English to pursue her interest in game-based learning and how to bring it forth in her teaching.

Learn more about Iliana below!

I aspire to be a community college English professor, hopefully seeing familiar faces in the classroom.
