Introducing our new Tenured Faculty: Kairon Shayne Garcia
Dr. Kairon Shayne D. Garcia is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Economics at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). She holds a PhD in Economics from Washington State University (WSU) and bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of the Philippines.
Kai’s research focuses on applied microeconomics and econometrics, with a particular focus on causal inference in labor economics, economics of education, and development. Her recent work examines the effects of COVID-19 school closures on parental employment and student outcomes. Her current research projects investigate factors affecting remote work in the U.S., the impact of climate change adaptation on labor and productivity, and the role of lobbying and environmental regulation faced by firms in select countries in Europe.
Previously, Kai taught various economics courses at WSU, where she received the 2023 School of Economic Sciences Excellence in Teaching Award. Kai’s professional background also includes roles as a research consultant at the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank - Philippines, and as an Economic Development Specialist for the National Economic and Development Authority in the Philippines.
In her free time, Kai enjoys reading, watching shows, and exploring new places!
