The Child and Family Center History

2023 - We are pleased to announce a new, expanded Center which will welcome student-parent families--to be launched in the 24/25 academic year. Please revisit this site for updates.

1991 - CSULB Policy Statement on Child Care: Changes in the American economy and shifts in demographics are rapidly reshaping the American family and work place. Surveys revealed that two out of five workers have difficulty balancing their responsibilities at home and on the job. Work place environments that recognize and assist employees with child care responsibilities increase employee morale, reduce absenteeism, increase productivity and reduce turnover. The University values its’ employees and wishes to be responsive to their needs.  A committee was establish to focus on child care issues, determining the needs of the campus and investigating options to meet those needs.

1992 - Family Studies and Consumer Sciences Department votes to expand the current student teacher training site, Child Study laboratories into classroom space vacated by Interior Design

1993 - Women’s summit presented by the President’s Commission on the Status of Women 11/19/93. Child care identified as a priority of campus.

1994 - University Dedication of space in FCS for Child and Family Center-(Dr. Karl Anatol)

1995 - 1998 - Funding secured for start of expansion.

1998 - Expansion for two year- round preschool classrooms begins. Preschool program open in Fall 1998.

2002 - Minor cap monies identified for Toddler year round classroom expansion. Toddler classroom opens in Fall of 2002

2007 - Reaccreditation under the new NAEYC standards

2012 - Reaccreditation achieved from NAEYC

2017 - New 5 year reaccreditation from NAEYC is achieved
