Fall CHHS Wine Education Event

See, smell, swirl, smell (again), sip, swish and swallow - the seven "S's" of wine tasting were on full display in Monday's beverage management class, as students in the Hospitality Management program in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences studied and sampled various wines. 

It was all in preparation for the upcoming College of Health and Human Services Fall 2024 renewal of the Beach Wine & Culinary Excellence Series. The event takes place aboard The Queen Mary on Thursday, October 24 from 6-9pm.

"I learned a lot today," said fourth-year Hospitality Management student Floella Platt," I didn't really know too much about wine, especially red wines before today, but it was neat diving into the complex flavor profiles and smells of each wine."

These same wines will be highlighted at the October wine event. As part of the beverage management class, taught by Dr. Nohema Garcia-Castaneda, students were treated to a lesson and wine tasting activity facilitated by guest speaker Dr. Anna Ortiz, Dean of the College of Education who is also a Certified Sommelier. 

"My favorite was the sparkling rosé," Platt added. "I'm very excited to see it all come together at the event," she said. 

The College of Health and Human Services has made the Wine and Culinary Excellence Series a staple in its academic calendar, giving students in the Hospitality Management students real life experience in what they hope to pursue as a career in the future.

"I'm a senior this year and I really want to do event planning, so I'm excited for this event and I love The Queen Mary. I think it will be a cool experience," Platt said. 

The event will feature high-end wines that have been very highly rated. For example, the Lail Vineyard's J Daniel Cuvee Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley boasts a perfect score (100) by Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate, which is extremely rare. 

During the beverage management class Dr. Ortiz explained to the students that a score of anywhere between 90-100, signifies "a classically great wine." 

"You won't be able to find wines like the Cuvee at Bevmo," Dr. Ortiz stated. "These are special wines and the fact that the college will be showcasing them for the event is very exciting."
