College Bowl 2024

In April, the Health Care Management (HCM) department, HCM Student Forum, and Upsilon Phi Delta hosted the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) annual College Bowl on the CSULB campus. After more than 15 years of participating, CSULB was selected to host the event this year. The event was followed by a reception/networking event hosted by the HCM department.

The College Bowl is an annual academic contest for graduate and undergraduate students currently enrolled in healthcare programs that are part of the ACHE Higher Education Network. The College Bowl began as a Jeopardy-style contest with teams answering questions related to health care policy and management. The format has evolved into a case study competition. Students use their creativity and knowledge of healthcare administration to solve a case study that focuses on real issues faced by healthcare executives and their organizations.

The First Place Undergraduate team (pictured below from left to right) was Huan Dao, Kathy Nguyen, Katrina Watson (Team Captain) and Oluwaseun Oriretan.

"This is an exciting event for our students. Each of the students who opt to participate spend many hours in preparation for the event," said HCM Chair Dr. Henry O'Lawrence

"This is a professional exercise that gives our students practice in research, discipline, and public speaking. Additionally, it gives them the opportunity to apply skills and knowledge in a real-world setting. It also affords them the opportunity to network with students from as many as 13 other universities."

Tom Knego, the HCM Advisory Board President and several of the HCM faculty members who work with these students daily, helped prepare the students for this case study competition, which requires the students to research and prepare to present their case studies. There were both undergraduate and graduate teams participating in the competition representing CSULB.
