During her time at CSULB, Riley Rankin served as one of the first fashion ambassadors for the Fashion Merchandising and Design Program. She had the opportunity to visit community colleges and high schools and talk to students about pursuing a career in fashion by coming to CSULB to study.

“I feel that I had an amazing opportunity to inspire students to follow their passion for fashion and see where it takes them! I also had the amazing opportunity to study abroad in France!”

Riley says that working and going to school was not easy.

“My mom always told me to ‘do my best’ in all that I do, and I really took that to heart and ran with it. I have pushed myself to not only excel in school, but get the most out of working in retail trying to learn about the fashion industry in a hands on environment. I have learned so much and have grown immensely since I started college because I persevered and worked hard.”

When facing struggles, Riley says her stepdad Greg was also a source of inspiration.

“He always told me, ‘You are right where you are supposed to be.’ Taking this perspective in mind helped me in so many situations during my college career.”

Riley reiterates that while speaking with students as a fashion ambassador for the FM&D program and CSULB, she was very proud of the fact that she was able to inspire others to follow their dreams and pursue a degree that they would be passionate about.

“It was so rewarding to see them light up when they talked about fashion. I felt that I really made an impact in their journey as they were able to see me on my way to finishing my fashion degree and finally accomplishing one of my dreams.”

Another source of inspiration for Riley was her professor Dr. Jung Mee Mun.

“She inspired me to continue doing what I love in the bridal industry. She encouraged me to keep pursuing what I am passionate about. Right before graduating I told her my many ideas about what to pursue, and I mentioned that I was happy in my current job. She told me to continue working my way up at this company so that I could get the most out of this opportunity. I consider this valuable advice!”

Congratulations, Riley!
