CED Alum Appointed LBCC Superintendent-President

Congratulations to Dr. Mike Muñoz (‘04,’05,’10) on his recent appointment as Superintendent-President of Long Beach City College!

Dr. Muñoz first joined LBCC in 2018 as the Vice President of Student Services before serving as Interim Superintendent-President beginning in March 2021. His appointment to Superintendent-President began January 1, 2022.

Dr. Muñoz is a graduate of the CSULB’s College of Education where he earned his master’s degree and credential in School Counseling and Ed.D. in Educational Leadership with a specialization in community college leadership.

Crediting CSULB with shaping him into the educational leader he is today, Dr. Muñoz shared, “CSULB instilled in me my values as a social justice educator and provided me with the tools to actualize my values as a counselor, administrator, and now president. I also found my academic voice at CSULB. I learned as a leader to draw from the power of inquiry in addressing issues of student success and racial equity. To be able to connect research to practice in a way that creates the needed transformational change at our institutions.”

Offering advice to students working towards a career in education, Dr. Muñoz shared:

I encourage college students working towards a career in education to really take the time to understand their “why” for pursuing a career in education. Our personal “why” anchors us in our work as educators, and can be a source of motivation that drives us to achieve in the face of challenges. My personal why is very much rooted in my experiences as a first-generation college student and as a single parent. I connect my personal why to our college’s collective “why” in advancing a student experience that is affirming and responsive to populations that have been historically underserved by our institutions. I encourage emerging educators to ask themselves how their personal “why” connects with their institutions collective “why” in promoting student success and equity.
