For many students embarking on their college journey, support from family and loved ones plays a crucial role during this phase of life often marked by stark transition and new beginnings

With that understanding, CSULB’s many Parent & Family Programs offered at the outset of each new semester are designed to engage and connect these support networks through information, resources, and events. That’s why the Beach 2030 team working to build an equitable and empowering culture at CSULB is leading a project to expand access to opportunities for students and their families to get oriented, together, to all CSULB has to offer.

Through the support of Beach 2030, a new initiative will cover fees for some families to attend Parent and Family Orientation, an annual in-person event that showcases campus resources and allows students and their supporters to explore The Beach over the course of a day prior to the upcoming semester.

The cost is $40 per person to attend the orientation event, an obstacle for some, limiting their opportunity to take part in this valuable on-campus experience. Approved during the 2022-2023 academic year, the project commits to providing up to 50 waivers during a summer pilot rollout.

Over 70% of students enrolled in CSULB receive some form of financial aid, with a large percentage of our learners being first-generation. As we strive to build One Beach Family, this fee waiver project represents one meaningful opportunity to expand access on our campus, removing barriers to success for our students.

Strong family involvement can be vital for new learners, and through this initiative, the Beach 2030 team aims to foster the kind of support that can lead students to earn higher grades and transition more smoothly to the college environment because their family network has information to aid them in their success.

Ensuring our family programs are inclusive, accessible, and support our diverse student body is one way this group is working to promote equity across our campus, starting at the very beginning of a learner’s experience at The Beach.
