Confidentiality

It is our goal to provide an experience in which you feel comfortable, and this includes a responsibility to protect your privacy and the personal information you disclose to us.   

Professional services offered at CAPS are provided by psychologists, social workers, marriage and family therapists, physicians, and graduate level interns.  In adherence to California State Law, as well as the ethical standards of the mental health professions named above, all services provided at CAPS are confidential.  This means that your personal information may not be disclosed to anyone outside of our office without your knowledge and written consent.  If you are 18 years of age or older, this includes that information may not be disclosed to your parent or guardian without your knowledge and written consent.   

We are legally required to maintain a written record of all services you receive.  CAPS records are not included in your academic records and are not available to any other office on and off campus without your knowledge and written consent.  

There are circumstances in which we are required to disclose confidential information, even in the absence of client consent.  California State Law requires mental health providers must breach confidentiality in the following circumstances: 

• Suspected abuse of a child, dependent adult, or elderly person  
• Client is considered to be a danger to themselves 
• Client is considered to be a danger to another person 
• Court order 

Confidentiality and privacy practices will be discussed further during your first appointment. Your CAPS Counselor will be happy to address any questions you may have.
