Voluntary Surrender Form
As part of our legal and ethical obligations under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and the California Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (CalNAGPRA, AB-275, AB-389), CSULB is committed to a collaborative, campus-wide approach to ensure that we are achieving timely and respectful consultations to repatriate the Native American ancestors and cultural items that have been held in our institution.
We understand that due to the sensitive nature anonymous surrenders might be a more comfortable way for the campus community to come forward and aid the Office of Tribal Relations in achieving timely and respectful repatriations.
Please Note: Human remains, and cultural items are not limited to recovery from archaeological excavations. They may be from purchases or gifts to your unit/department, staff or faculty, or the campus at any point in time. Human remains without clear identifications or from unknown sources must be included in your findings.
AB-275 requires minimizing handling of the human remains, items and/or collections by using existing information in your records and visual inspections only. Please do not move or touch human remains, items, or collections. If the human remains, cultural items and/or collections are housed in an improper manner or facilities such as exposed to harmful elements, environments, or unsecured, immediately relocate them to a safe and secure location and contact Miztla Aguilera, Tribal Cultural Collections Manager. Further, AB-389 prohibits the use of Native American human remains and cultural items in teaching and research therefore, access must be restricted to the Department/Unit director until further notice.
