Yes, a restrictive covenant implemented by the university in 2021 permanently limits land use on Puvungna. Information on the restrictions can be found on the Declaration of Restrictive Covenant document.
Yes, the university will be seeking a conservation easement manager along with necessary funding to maintain and protect the 22-acre site on the west side of campus. This will ensure independent care of the site in perpetuity.
Once necessary funding is in place, the university will issue a Request for Proposal. More information about the requirements for a conservation easement manager are available on our Protections & Conservation webpage.
The 22-acre site is currently managed by Beach Building Services based on agreed-upon methods via tribal consultation documented in the 2035 Campus Master Plan Update.
All matters relating to Puvungna, consultation, or tribal engagement should be directed to the Office of Tribal Relations managed by Thalia Gomez, Director.
All matters relating to NAGRPA and CalNAGPRA should be directed to Miztla Aguilera, Tribal Cultural Collections Manager.
