Western Regional Honors Council Conference 2024
The Western Regional Honors Council (WRHC) Conference will be held on March 28-29, 2024 at CSULB.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Dr. Jennifer Abod
As a Jewish Lesbian Feminist, Dr. Jennifer Abod has spent over five decades passionately addressing inequality across age, race, class, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality.
Dr. Abod is an award-winning director of four documentary films, a former assistant professor of Communications and Women’s Studies. For many years, she was a radio broadcaster on Public Radio and a commercial radio talk-host on the east coast.
Her film The Passionate Pursuits of Angela Bowen, which will be screening at the conference, has won national and international awards, and aired on the PBS program, To the Contrary. Her other films include: The Edge of Each Other’s Battles: The Vision of Audre Lorde. Nice Chinese Girls Don’t: A poetry memoir with Kitty Tsui and Look Us in the Eye: The Old Women’s Project.
At the height of second wave feminism, Dr. Abod was cultural and community activist. She was the singer in the New Haven Women’s Liberation Rock Band and was co-founder of Women’s Health Advocates.
Her current passions include being a jazz singer and writing poetry. Her poems have been published in: One Art Journal, The Metro Washington Weekly, Silver Birch Press, Wild Crone Wisdom, Artemis Journal, Sinister Wisdom and are forthcoming in Spillway Magazine.
It is an honor for the CSULB University Honors Program, as host of the 2024 WRHC Conference, to welcome Dr. Abod and celebrate her life’s accomplishments.
WRHC 2024 Program
We are looking forward to sharing the WRHC 2024 experience with you. The program includes the conference schedule with presenters, presentations titles and abstracts, as well as other important information about the conference. We also include details about the opening reception, pertinent maps, exploration resources, and health and safety information.
Call for Proposals is now closed. Early Bird Registration is open through February 29, 2024. Regular registration will be open through March 15, 2024
Alyssa Alfaro (she/her)
Alyssa Alfaro, a President Scholar from the Class of 2025, is a Biomedical Engineering major with a minor in Applied Mathematics at California State University Long Beach. She is a first-generation Mexican-American woman who has a deep desire to help her family and others with the many possibilities her further education in Bioengineering can offer. She plans to earn a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering while specializing in decellularized organs and contribute to the creation of an artificial kidney. She is incredibly grateful and appreciative of the opportunity to be a part of this special conference.
Reon Allen (he/him)
My name is Reon Allen, I am a President Scholar in the Class of 2025 and a Class Representative. I am a Physics major with a minor in Applied Statistics. I am planning to earn my Ph.D. in Astrophysics and am currently doing my Honors thesis in Asteroseismology. In my free time I enjoy being as involved in my communities as I possibly can, I volunteer with Long Beach BLAST mentoring elementary students, I am President of the Astronomy Club, and a Resident Assistant at the dorms. I am very excited to work on this fantastic conference.
Nicolas Alvarez (he/him)
Hello fellow colleagues, my name is Nicholas Alvarez and I’m an undergraduate student at California State University Long Beach studying psychology. I want to get my bachelor's degree in psychology and then pursue a PhD in psychology. I want to become a clinical psychologist, but I do have a deep interest in the biological mechanisms underlying psychology as well. In my free time, I enjoy reading religious literature, hanging out with my close friends, meditating, and creating edited videos. Thank you.

Kaylee Brubaker, majoring in Human Development with a minor in Equity and Education Studies, is graduating this year from CSULB and hopes to pursue a career in school counseling and education. A proud member of the University Honors Program, Kaylee is humbled by the opportunity to share a space with world-changer Dr. Jennifer Abod. I’m Jamella Camandang, a second year Pre-KIN Exercise Science major. Additionally, I am a part of class of 2022 for CSULB’s President’s Scholars. As a student leader, I hope to be able to warmly welcome those in attendance to Long Beach as well as meet new people.

My name is Gerardo Escoto, I am a second-year computer science major. I became interested in volunteering and being a part of putting together the conference because I enjoy giving back to the community. I find myself feeling fulfilled when doing something that helps others. One of my main goals is to develop pieces of technology that can benefit others and inspire them to pursue what they find fulfilling.

Hi everyone! My name is Kylee and I am currently in my last year as a Sociology major. I am very involved on campus with WRHC and our orientation department. Outside of school, I love to read books and go to movie theaters. I am so excited to meet everyone for WRHC and welcome you all to The Beach!

I love making a positive impact in my community; I’m currently involved as the President of the Design Student Association and the President of the Themed Entertainment Association. Hello my name is Jules Tixier, I’m a first year here at Long Beach and I moved to the USA 7 years ago, I’m fully French and lived there for 11 years. I’m majoring in Kinesiology to eventually become a Physical Therapist. I really enjoy playing sports such as tennis and soccer. I’m a lot into film production and movies. And I love to travel around the world, exploring new cities and nature.

- Scribendi is a nonprofit, annual print publication that publishes creative work from undergraduate Honors students from more than 150 institutions in the Western Regional Honors Council (WRHC). Scribendi is primarily produced by Honors students at the University of New Mexico (UNM) Honors College—however, in 2016-2017 the magazine introduced its first exchange student, and two more for the 2017-2018 school year. If you would like to join our staff next year, please email us at scribendi@unm.edu.
- Scribendi is currently accepting submissions for the 37th volume, which will be officially released at the WRHC conference. Please consider submitting creative nonfiction, short fiction, poetry, foreign language (with translation), visual art, photography, or open media (such as short films or music) by October 13th. All contributors will be invited to the WRHC reception and recognized for their creative work. To submit, visit scribendi.unm.edu.
