Academic Preparation

All first-time first-year students at CSULB must enroll in Math (Quantitative Reasoning) and English (Written Communication) classes during their first year in compliance with EO 1110. Research proves that these foundational courses, if taken at the beginning of a student’s academic career, facilitates the ability for students to be successful during the transition to college-level academic work.

In general, a combination of your high school math grades, high school grade point average, high school coursework history, and any applicable college coursework history will determine your placement in both Written Communication and Math courses.

• Use the General Education Placement Estimator:
  To estimate your placement in Written Communication and Math courses, use the CSU General Education Placement Estimator.
   
• What if I took the ACT or SAT Exam(s)?
  While the CSU no longer uses ACT or SAT for admission eligibility, if you complete the ACT or SAT exam(s), the results may be used for placement in your Math or Written Communication courses. 
   
• Does my major require me to take specific Math courses?
  Your Math Quantitative Reasoning (QR) General Education Category B4 requirements may differ based on your major. Explore the Course Recommendation Guide for support.
   
• Can I meet with an advisor?
  During your Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) appointment, you will have the opportunity to meet with your advising centers for support. For more information, visit csulb.edu/soar.
