The UCSD-CSULB Doctoral Diversity Initiative (DDI) program offers excellent opportunities for undergraduate students from California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) to gain research experience and for Ph.D. students/postdocs from UC San Diego (UCSD) to pursue academic careers in primarily undergraduate institutes.
We aim to increase diversity in the field of materials science by providing training opportunities. Students from an underrepresented background are extremely encouraged to apply.

Mission
UCSD-CSULB Doctoral Diversity Initiative program is funded by the UC Chancellor’s Office to increase doctoral diversity in materials science. The program runs on the collaboration between the UCSD Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) and the CSULB Chemistry and Biochemistry Department.
The mission of the DDI program is to increase diversity of students successfully completing Ph.D. programs and entering leadership positions in academia in the field of materials science.
Activities of the Program
- Opportunities for CSULB undergraduate students to conduct research at UCSD during summer with stipend through the RIMSE Summer Schools.
- Career advice for UCSD Ph.D. students and postdoc who would like to pursue an academia career in a primarily undergraduate institution.
- Opportunities for collaborative research between CSULB and UCSD faculty.
- Workshops and seminars to prepare CSULB undergraduate students for applying to Ph.D. programs.
