Brotman Hall (BH) Courtyard Renovation
Beach Building Services will be performing courtyard improvements in the center of Brotman Hall between the below mentioned dates. In addition to the recently enhanced center bench seating area, an 82” display monitor will be installed on the east wall and upgrades to the existing landscape and concrete will be completed. Landscape upgrades include the installation of (4) new palm trees that would replace our existing trees in the courtyard.
After careful study and consideration, we find that our beautiful ficus trees in the Brotman Hall courtyard need to be replaced. Restricted root growth from the surrounding concrete has severely limited these trees' ability to uptake required nutrients, water, and oxygen to naturally protect themselves from pests and properly balance the weight of their increasingly heavy limb and canopy growth. Year-to-year canopy height reductions, recent removal of heavy limbs to prevent premature limb failure, ongoing pest treatments, and continued releveling of lifted concrete to prevent trip hazards have finally taken their toll and are not sustainable.
Decisions that affect our existing campus forest are never easy, and we take the well-being of both our trees and campus community members very seriously. We are dedicated to protecting our campus forest and we continue to practice a 1:1 or 1:2 tree replacement ratio. Accordingly, four new palm trees will be planted in the Brotman Hall courtyard, as these particular specimens are better suited for this location.
