Select your Culminating Activity
- Consult your Graduate Advisor to discuss the Culminating Activity options available in your program of study (Thesis, Project, Comprehensive Exam)
- Identify the one that is best for you, your post degree plans (e.g., PhD?), and your career
- Signifies approval of a plan of study and your culminating activity
- The requirements for advancement to candidacy are:
- Attain classified status in your graduate program at CSULB;
- Complete with a minimum GPA of 3.0 of at least six units of courses required in your program of study;
- Earn a cumulative, graduate, grade-point average of at least 3.0 in all upper-division and graduate-level coursework attempted at CSULB after completion of a baccalaureate degree;
- Receive approval of your program of study from your graduate advisor; and
- Satisfactorily complete any assessments of competence that the department/program may require
Students who are approaching the end of their graduate studies must complete these final steps to earn their degree.
- Apply to graduate
- Purchase regalia during the Graduation Fair in March
- Check your graduation status in your MyCSULB
- Clear any holds on your account
- Resolve grades of incomplete (I)/report in progress (RP)
- Satisfy requirements for your degree
- Complete your culminating activity
- Publish your thesis via the Thesis and Dissertation Office
- Publish your project in ScholarWorks
- Pass your final semester with an overall and program GPA of 3.0
- Change your graduation term (if needed)
- Take the Exit Survey in your SSO
- Register to participate in Commencement
- Register to participate in Cultural Commencement ceremonies
- Consult your college's website for additional registration and ceremony details
- Programs may have a private hooding ceremony; consult Graduate Advisor for details

- The Office of International Students and Scholars Services (ISS) supports international students, visiting scholars, and international faculty with immigration advising and support services.

- Want to take a class without being admitted to CSULB?
- Open University offers the opportunity for anyone to enroll in a course without being admitted to the university. You can take courses on a space-available basis and earn college credit during the Fall and Spring semesters.
