Parent Involvement

Parent Support Group

Experience and research suggest that when parents and other adults show an interest in and support a child's education, the child's chances for academic success are greatly increased. Parent involvement and participation in educational activities can often be a motivator for the child. Interest and support can raise his or her academic achievement, improve attitudes and performance, and foster better communication

The Parent Support Group is composed of Upward Bound staff and all the parents/guardians of currently enrolled CSULB Upward Bound students. Parents are encouraged to be active members of Parent Support Group during the academic year and summer residential program.

  • Parent Support Group meetings will be held once a month during the academic year, September through May; and approximately 3 meetings will be held during the summer. These meetings will focus on program updates, as well as planning and implementing activities for the students.
  • Parents are asked to contribute a minimum 10 hours of support services throughout the year.

Parent Support Group members can help the Upward Bound Program by:

  • chaperoning
  • carpooling
  • monitoring tutorials
  • providing refreshments for meeting
  • serving on committees
  • providing nutrition snacks for Saturday instruction
