Office of Belonging and Inclusion (OBI)

Formerly known as Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA).

Mission Statement

The Office of Belonging and Inclusion (OBI) at California State University, Long Beach is committed to creating a campus environment where every individual feels valued, supported, and empowered to succeed. Through intentional programs, education, and community engagement, we strive to foster a strong sense of connection and development for all students. Our mission is guided by three core principles: Educate, Connect, and Advocate.

All students, regardless of sex, race, color, national origin, and/or any other protected identity, who are interested in the program’s mission and focus are welcome and eligible to participate in OBI events and programs.


Vision Statement

We envision a dynamic campus community where connection and collaboration are central to student success and well-being. OBI aims to set a standard of excellence in fostering an environment where every student feels empowered to fully engage, contribute meaningfully, and achieve their potential.


Goals

  • To support campus engagement among CSU Long Beach students, faculty, and staff influenced by values of equity, cultural wealth, interculturalism, intersectionality, and antiracist practices (educate).
  • To foster a sense of belonging and connection on campus and beyond the CSU Long Beach community (connect).
  • To create opportunities that build perspective, expand consciousness, and develop agency skills (advocate).

Guiding Principles

Educate
Through workshops, discussions, and programs, OBI provides opportunities to deepen understanding and broaden perspectives. Our educational initiatives equip students, faculty, and staff with tools to engage thoughtfully and navigate complex issues while fostering a culture of mutual respect and shared learning.

Connect
OBI builds a strong campus community by creating opportunities for meaningful interactions and collaboration. By partnering with campus and local organizations, we support students in developing lasting connections and a sense of belonging within the CSU Long Beach community.

Advocate
OBI supports policies and initiatives that enhance the campus experience for all students. We encourage students to become active contributors to positive change, helping to shape a community that values connection, collaboration, and shared success.
